In this first seminar, you will tour the current exhibition at the HoloCenter with me through video recordings. We will look at the "Past" section of this show in which the holograms were recorded on red-sensitive silver halide film with either a pulsed ruby laser or a Helium-Neon gas laser.
We will explore how these artists managed to create complex multicolored images using only a red laser. Exploring some powerful pulsed holographic works by Ana Maria Nicholson, a rainbow hologram by Rudie Berkhout and multi-colored reflection holograms by John Kaufman we will look at the major techniques used to create color holograms while only using a red laser.
From there we will move on to the "Present" and look at very recent DCG Holograms created by August Muth, more DCG works by 3 students of August's, Dora Tass, Michael Crawford and Joan Stango, and 3 digital holograms by Sally Weber. DCG has the potential to make multi-colored holographic images using only a green laser, you can coat your own holographic plates and not have to purchase very expensive coated silver halide plates that are only produced in Europe. However, there are important characteristics of DCG that require specialized techniques and August Muth has opened a door to novel techniques with this extraordinary medium.
We will explore the state of the art of Fine Art Holography including the exciting potential of photopolymer emulsions and their self-developing characteristics. Holography as a Fine Art medium is changing. Join us for a look at the techniques that are available to us now.

You can also see these works for yourselves by visiting the HoloCenter at 518 Broadway, Kingston, NY12401. The gallery is open Friday - Sunday 12 - 5 pm.
